Professor David Nicholls : Auckland University of Technology

David Nicholls, PhD, MA, GradDip, MPNZ, SFHEA, is Professor of Critical Physiotherapy at AUT University in Auckland, New Zealand where is a physiotherapist, lecturer, researcher, and writer specializing in critical physiotherapy. As the founder of the Critical Physiotherapy Network (CPN), he promotes the use of interdisciplinary approaches, including cultural studies, history, philosophy, and sociology, to study the past, present, and future of the profession. Prof Nicholls is also a co-founder of the International Physiotherapy History Association (IPHA) Executive and a founding member of the Environmental Physiotherapy Association (EPA). His research focuses on the philosophy, sociology, and critical history of physiotherapy, exploring how the profession can adapt to the evolving healthcare economy. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and books, including “The End of Physiotherapy” (2017) and “Physiotherapy Otherwise” (2022). Prof Nicholls actively engages with social media and has established platforms for discussing critical physiotherapy and post-critical healthcare. With over 30 years of teaching experience, he has delivered presentations worldwide.
